The 2008 Olympics were a great success for the British Olympic team. There were many fantastic performances none more so than our cyclists. The previous all conquering Australians were dejected and demoralised by Britain’s overall strength and determination. After winning the gold medal in the ladies sprint races Victoria Pendleton was asked by a reporter what the one big thing the cycling team had done to create such an overwhelming superiority. Her reply was nothing, what we have done is make many small changes giving many small advantages, but combined they had made one big advantage for the
British Cycling team. Had all the individual Olympic teams adopted the same
philosophy sucessfully they would have turned many small advantages into
many large ones for the British Olympic team.

This philosophy is at the heart of continuous improvement.
The British cycling team used Continuous Improvement to create massive
competitive advantage in private sector terms. In the public sector this
